President of Guatemala urges investigation of murdered lawyer and clarification of the accusations against him

E-mail Print PDF
portraitcolom01jpgGuatemala City- Guatemalan Lawyer Rodrigo Rosenberg was murdered while riding his bike on the morning Sunday 10 of May. After his death, copies of a document signed by him and a videotape appeared stating that he was assassinated by orders of President Alvaro Colon and Gustavo Alejos, Private Secretary of the Presidency.."

The lawyer Rodrigo Rosenberg explains in the video and the document, that he had knowledge that implicated President Alvaro Colom, his wife, the first lady, Sandra de Colom, Gustavo Alejos, Private Secretary of the Presidency and Gregorio Valdez, financier of President Alvaro Colom in the murder of his client Khalil Musa in April 2009.

The killing of the businessman Khalil Musa is allegedly related to his discovery of corruption, money laundering schemes and the deviation of public funds to non-existent social projects headed by the First Lady at BANRURAL, a state owned bank for development. Musa was on the board of Directors of the Bank.

President Colom vehemently denies this accusation and has asked the United Nations, CICIG, the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala, the FBI and the help of the international community to investigate the murders.

The Attorney General of Guatemala Amilcar Velásquez Zárate gave statements regarding several hypothesis in relation to the murder of Rosenberg. The house of lawyer Rodrigo Rosenberg is being investigated by prosecutors of the public ministry. BANRURAL in being investigated also.

The Guatemala's CACIF, organization that represents the powerful private sector of Guatemala demanded  the investigation of these cases. CACIF and the present government headed by Alvaro Colom are not on good terms.

Today protests where held in front of the Presidential palace demanding that President Colom should resign. The protesters where mainly friends, relatives and representatives of the private sector in Guatemala.

Ex-general Otto Perez of the political opposition also demanded that President Colom step down. Ex-General Otto Perez lost the elections in 2007 against Alvaro Colom.

The editorials of the main printed press in Guatemala demand a clear investigation of the murders of Rosenberg and Musa, but there is remarkable restrain, moderation and objectivity in their posture.

CICIG, the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala is collaborating with the investigation of the case since yesterday.

Presidential assassins hit again (Hugo Arce, Rivera, Rosemberg, Zarco, Mussa)
Rodrigo Rosenberg is another victim of this government of corrupt savage and ignorant leaders. We, Guatemalans are on the edge and cannot witness any more assassinations of decent citizens. Alvaro Colom is also guilty for the assassination of my father the journalist and poet Hugo Arce, who was murdered a day before he was to be tried on false charges of defamation brought by the first lady of Guatemala Sandra Torres de Colom. Of course Colom is going to deny any links to all the murders he has committed and sadly like always impunity will reign in our loved Guatemala. Hopefully the CICIG (International Community against Impunity) will have the courage and the support to face all the crimes that the presidential couple is guilty of.

There is something very fishy with this whole story and the timing.
Lawyer Mario David García is mentioned as a contact of Rosenberg, according to newspaper reporting.
The most right winger of all right wingers.

He has very good relations with the old military guard, involved in the Guatemalan internal conflict.
Otto Perez is ex-general, also part of the old military guard, he is connected to the private sector of Guatemala, they supported his campaign for the presidency when he run for office in 2007 and lost.

Organized Crime in Guatemala is connected to the military and to powerful private sector figures.

Currently several investigations lead by CICIG are getting closer to be able to prosecute ex- military involved in atrocities during the war.

Last week 9 human rights activist received death threats because they are involved in the research of the declassified military files from the Estado Mayor Presidential.

The wife of Guatemala’s Ombudsman Sergio Morales was kidnapped and tortured one day after Sergio Morales made police records from the internal conflict period public. The police then was under the command of the military.

The election of magistrates for the Guatemalan Supreme Court, appellant courts, and many other very important judicial assignments are on the table now, this coming months.

If the rules of these elections are not changed, the same corrupt judicial system will remain in place. No case will be successfully prosecuted as it should be, impunity will continue, as it has for the last 12 years.

My question is: who has the most to gain by these murders?
It is certainly not President Colom and his friends.
I do not think that they are perfect, far from it.
There are probably very bad apples in the current government, as there have been in all the previous governments.

But the question remains: who benefits the most from these murders?

This story stinks from here to the North Pole,

It's not fishy... it's reality
It's fishy that a Cambridge Law Graduate accusses a corrupt president of trying to assasinate him? Mr. Colom again is using the "rich against the poor" rethoric. ENOUGH with the BS!! It's pure ignorance of the real facts that causes people to argue this is a "plot". If Mr. Colom is innocent, he should submit himself to international courts, hand in Banrural's books (as indicated by law), and step down while his name is cleared. Set an example Mr President, cause talk is CHEAP!!

@Alvaro Morales We know!!!
For sure it stinks, it has done so for a long time. This is no a plot, this is everyday life in Guatemala. We are tired of this, we have been for a long time. The only difference is that THIS TIME we finally have a solid piece of proof that can not be swept under the table or a witness that can be silenced (ups.. they tried to...). Don't you dare spread the this is a plot argument, at this point no true guatemalan patriot would put up with that. We are not going to let this one go. Even if the president is no directly involved, this time somebody is going down.

Law and Order in Guatemala
What about presumed innocent until guilty?
I think that applies to Presidents as well.
If it will be proven by a court of law that President Colom and his Wife did a drive-by shouting of Mr. Rosenberg they should be turned over to the mob in my opinion. Until then let’s hope the judicial system takes the steps necessary.

Have you ever noticed how all politicians wear a suit and tie? I think they all majored in Ass-Kissing, and that these neckties choke off the circulation to their heads so they can't think well. Why aren't there any real people in politics. People withoiut suits and ties who won't kiss the asses of big money, but really want to do things to help people and make society better. Maybe if people were free to use lands for their survival, registering unused lands in their names, not for profit from selling them. then maybe people would flee the polluted cities of crime and become nice people growing fruits and veges and living lives of greater joy. Having more time to laugh, dance, sing and play music of happiness? wouldn' that just be too simple, to let people be free to "legally" live on the earth as free people. Land for those who work it for their survival.
